Activated Charcoal helpful in treating Poisoning in Dogs.

With Easter approaching and all that extra chocolate around the home its comforting to know that there is a natural way to treat poisoning although, the first thing you need to do should you suspect this has happened, is call your holistic vet or veterinary emergency hospital.

Activated charcoal absorbs chemicals or toxins and facilitates excretion via the faeces.

Basically Activated Charcoal acts like a magnet, attracting and attaching toxins to it, consequently, it passes through the gastrointestinal tract without being absorbed by the body.

Usually when a vet induces vomiting, activated charcoal will be given to help absorb some of the remaining poison or toxin in the gastrointestinal tract.

For you to be able to administer Activated Charcoal, your dog needs to be able to swallow. Activated charcoal tablets or powder may be available through health food stores, in their vitamins and supplements section. You can crush these tablets or use powder to

add to your dogs food which is probably the easiest way to administer, however some dogs will eat it, others may simply feel too ill.

In most Vet hospitals, they use a liquid suspension that is given orally, usually via the side of the mouth or by a stomach tube, something we dont reccomend you try, and if you find yourself in a situation where one is needed, please see your Vet.

After administering activated charcoal your pet’s stool will be black, which is perfectly normal.

Dosage: Usually around 1/2 teaspoon per 4.5 kilos in body weight. So you need to be precise with your dogs weight.

As always if in any doubt please contact your Holistic Veterinarian.

Fact: Did you know that Humans with Black Fillings in their mouths are absorbing Heavy Metals which are toxic..? Other than having these fillings removed, regularly eating Activated Charcoal really helps reduce the effects of poisoning, which is actually quite a serious issue... most people dont even realise how much toxic fillings can effect mood and overall health.
